Jensen, The speedo is mounted with a spring inside the headlight shell.

Dr. Les, I looked at the grips tonight after our phone conversation. The throttle grip is original but torn on the inside and not that great of shape. It does have bands on the rubber tubes off the carbs like you said, not springs. Grey control cables, NO script on the bottom of the speedo/tach. I forgot to look at the oil cover but pretty sure its blank. Nice talking to you, have a good night. Scott

Hi Scott,

A great find, there are not so much of these around. Thanks for the verification.

It seems that Honda did mount the '61 speedo's on (early) '62's. Maybe the switch is made together with the old style grips and the old style bezel (and maybe the black cables). It seems that there are three different styles bezels (maybe four), you probably have the second type.

The lack of springs on the intake rubber wasn't expected by me on an early '62, everyday you learn something again.

Does the engine has the breather tower or does it has the vent on the cylinder head cover ?
Where is the grease nipple of the front fork cable situated ?

Sorry for all those questions, but for me this information is important. It's still unclear to me when Honda made the changes between a early 61 model and the late '62 model.

Thanks for your trouble,

Jensen

Jensen

Nice to meet you! No problem on all the questions. I am excited myself to contribute any information or pictures for reference. Here are some answers and more pics to follow.

I do not see the breather tower you mentioned. I have a hose coming from the top of the valve cover like the later bikes.

The grease nipple on the front brake cable is above the cable clamp behind the chrome ring under the left headlight fork ear. The cable clamp is held by the fork stanchion pinch bolt.

There is also a metal tag attached to the top of the left side of the swingarm. Its all in Japanese.I also found the white tag on the wiring harness and its labelled 1961 .6 (6th month?) Sumitomo.

More pics to follow, I'm using my blackberry camera and it takes some time.

Hi,

Thanks for the pictures. Is there (in the middle) between the speed cable input and the tacho cable input an extension with a (small) hole in it to attach the spring onto ?

Indeed, if you can make a picture of the bottom of the speedo and the bottom of the headlight case it will be good to see.

On the forum there is already a translation of the Japanese writing on the rear fork (if you have trouble finding it, I will find it for you).

The speedo cable is indeed the first issue cable, and is period correct (as far as I can see).
Date on the cable is very interesting, makes me curious if it has the light blue and the orange wire (winkers).

Again, a great find, not so much for what it's worth in money, but in history and info it shows,
