Correct fenders for a '67 CL77

Post by Snakeoil » Wed Aug 04, 2010 7:23 pm

Hi all,

I'm brand new to this forum and not the lurking type. Read quite a few posts tonight and am smarter already. Been around vintage bikes for awhile, but a little S90 got me interested in Japanese bikes, that and those were the bikes from my youth.

I'm going to look at a '67 CL77 in a few days and need some tech info. The pictures I have show chrome fenders. Yet I've seen other '67 CL77's with painted. Was '67 a transition year?

I've been told that the big front brake is a '68 model year feature. But the it looks like this '67 has alum fork lowers and the big front brake. Is that correct for this bike?

I want to make sure I'm not buying a bitsa bike. I don't mind paying a fair price but don't want to be buying somebody's homemade erector set or previous junk pile.

I guess what I'd really like to know is, is there a site with good model year detail info listed out? That would probably answer all my questions.

Are their copies of service and parts manuals on-line anywhere? I've done some searching but found nothing yet.

As a first impression, this looks like a pretty good site. The S90 forum has some great folks on it and the Triumphrat vintage forum is excellent. This looks to be another great forum of info and knowledgeable folks. I'll try to share what I learn here as appropriate.

Thanks and regards,
Rob

Rob, 67 was the last year of production for the 305s. The later CL77s came with chrome fenders. Look under restoration projects, for pics of my blue 67. Post some pics of the bike, closer the better, and we can pick it apart for you. Aluminum sliders, and large brakes are on all of the 66-67 CL77s. It shouls also have the muffler welded on to the top pipe, as well as some other small differences. Bill Silvers rsto and repair guides are sold through this site, and highly recomended

Thanks for the quick reply. Amazing at how much partially right/wrong info is out there. I looked at a '66 earlier this year and it had a small front break. Guy claimed it was original. Saw another bike in a collection that was supposedly all original and it had the small front brake as well.

This bike has the muffler welded to the top pipe, chrome fenders, big front brake.

When you say '67 was the last year of production, you mean that '68 was the last model year, correct? I assume the date on the wiring harness determines production year and you add 1 to that year to get the model year, similar to my S90.

I search high and low for your '67 CL77 on the Restoration page. I even when thru every post there looking for your name as the author. I did other searches and could not find it. Can you help, please?

Here are two pics of the bike.

Thanks and regards,
Rob

Rob, it looks good. Pics are blurry when blown up, so hard to nit pick it. Seat cover should have silver piping around the top. I'm not sure where the pics of my blue bike ended up, on someone elses post me thinks! I'll post some more when I get a chance.

Thanks. I would imagine the silver might have worn to black with time... maybe... huh?

Are you guys aware that there are both Parts and Service manuals available as free downloads for the CB77? I found them both today after some searching. I imagine you folks already know this, but thought I'd mention it just the same.
regards,
Rob

It generally wears to a rust looking color, possibly a recover, as the strap is misssing as well. Post a link to the parts manuals when you get a chance.

Not all 67 CL77 seats had the Silver welt.
The ones with the Silver usually turned to a sort of Gold color due to ultra violet rays from the sun.
I have the Silver welt for sale if anyone is interested. .........lm
