Kick Start Has me baffled

Post by Davo » Sat Jul 10, 2010 11:10 am

First of all thanks to everyone here been a big help. I have looked at my Bill Silver guide and can't seem to figure out how to fix the kick start. I have a 69 and 65 CA77, I pulled the kick start and spring off the 65 to put on the 69. When i attempted to reassemble the spring in the resting position is what appears to 180 degrees wrong. (the kick handle points to the ground) I have looked through many posts about preloading the spring yet it still returns to the rest position up side down. any help would be great.

Davo, wind it back further, slide it over the splines. It may take e few attempts to get indexed correctly. Unless you re-assembled it incorrectly of course.

I will give it a try thanks. when winding it i should be going counter clockwise with the kick handle. What keeps it from returning to it's rested position.

Yes, wind it counter clockwise. When you slip it over the splines. it should only return as far as the internal stop for the kickshaft will allow.

where is The internal stop for the kick start stop located? The kick start shaft that the spring and handle connect to will rotate clockwise without a stop. is this correct? so when i load the spring no matter how far i have rotated the spring counter clockwise it will spin back to the rested position upside down. maybe still have assembly issue. thanks for your help.

Davo, the stop is in the transmission. Ther is a pawl, spring, and a pin. Sounds like that is where your issue lies. You have to split the case to access it.

Not what I wanted to hear but thanks. was hoping not to have to split the case but I think the clutch plates are stuck as well so I guess I will get to learn more as i go. thanks for your help. I am sure you will hear from me again. Davo
