I thought ya meant the bolt at the rod end.
Chase has offered good advice I see. ............lm

Cknight, so it should all tighten up with the lever having the ability to spin freely? The shift lever is an NOS purchase.
cknight wrote:Hi Scott, if you have had the shift lever replated, there may be a buildup on the ends of the barrel portion that the bolt goes through. The bolt should bottom out tightly on the footpeg bracket before the shift lever runs out of sideplay. The gentle use of a belt sander (medium grit) will effectively remove the excess plating, but be careful to avoid cracking and peeling the chrome where you want it to remain. A total side clearance of about .010-.015" should be fine. You may also want to reposition the lever that bolts to the shift spindle, so that there is a 90 degree relationship to the shift rod. This will provide the best leverage for proper shifting. Regards, Chase

She's back, stronger and faster than ever. Waiting on getting the fenders and air filter covers back. Mikey at Standley Customs is doing a beautiful job. So much has been done since last rebuild. Let me just make a small list.

Image

• Rebuilt Engine.
• New Cam Sprocket (Thanks LM).
• Modern XS650 4ohm ignition coils (very fat spark).
• New (restored) crankcases; top, left and right. (Thanks FastFred).
• Rebuilt and painted forks.
• Modified Dunstall exhaust.
• Reconditioned Speedo/Tach (Foreign Speedo)
• 28t aluminum rear sprocket custom machined (Sprocket Specialists).
• Gold 530 chain.
• Footpegs and controls moved to rear position.
• New shift linkage using Novelli parts from Guzzino.com
• Later model kush clutch (Thanks LM).
• Cadmium plated hardware.
• And dozens and dozens of little things refined everywhere.

So after a weekend of beautiful performance, I lost second gear completely. Either shifting up from 1st or down from 3rd, it lands in some sort of ghost neutral. Looks like I'm splitting the cases. All the other gears still shift beautifully.

The bike only has 8,000 original miles, but just about every other thing that could go wrong, has. This was literally the only thing I didn't go through, which I should have.

It's okay though, it'll give me an opportunity to x the gears and make replacements that should guarantee many miles of solid trouble free engine performance.

I'll be asking for some advice in the next few days, as soon as I get the cases split.
