Chrome Plater

Post by Kevmcp » Mon May 24, 2010 2:51 pm

Does anyone have any experience with a guy named Jim Cherewan in Minneapolis? He says if you send him the whole wheel, without delacing, they will re-chrome and polish everything, true it, and send it back. He sometimes has pieces on eBay....He says he has done many Dreams

I have had him do many, many pieces for my CL77. His work is amazing. Top quality. He is plating my wheels today and the wheels should be mounted and trued in a day or so. I'll let you know how they turn out.

Another member (un-named) emailed me and told me he lost many of his parts, and it took him two years, including driving to Minneapolis to get them back. Such different perceptions!

I suspect that many of these guys have good intentions, but either have some personal problems, like booze or just get overwhelmed with too much business and are not prepared for it.

There is a painter that specializes in Brit bikes and his work is supposedly superb. I've spoken to him and he comes across as a really nice and helpful guy. Problem is the same story as your chrome guy. Loses stuff, gives you back somebody else's tank, claims he never got your tank, etc.. Lots of complaints and warnings about him. I talked to a very reputable Triumph vendor, who once was the painter's source for correct paint. He would not come out and say anything negative, but he gave me the impression that the guy is just not mentally equipped for being a businessman. Sounded like he was a very talented painter that is completely scattered.

I thought I found a great plater based on the experience of a local friend. But then I spoke to a full time resto guy in CT, which is very close to the plater, and he said he tried them several times and had lots of bad luck. Said they polished a rim so much the spoke nipples passed thru the holes. He uses only Brown's. Yes, they are expensive, but they are also the best and know what they are doing. For parts that are not replaceable, it's worth the extra expense.

regards,
Rob
