Horn button logo

Post by conbs » Sat May 22, 2010 3:41 pm

My '65 CL77 horn button does not have the "TEC" logo. The logo has very small detail and my eyes are not that good anymore.

It looks like a small crab on the bottom and above it a globe or circle with a banner running horizontally.

Is this a Honda part and if so what signifigance does this unusual logo have?

I have a 66 CL77 and my horn button has the crab logo and what appears to be "MILES" (or NILES or HILES) across a circle as well. I assume it's a manufacturer's logo but don't know who it would be.

Gramey7. Is your horn button original?

I am not original owner of my bike. I bought it in pieces in 1972 and am finally putting it together as a nice rider. Nonetheless, I believe this is most likely the original horn button.

I've only had the bike since 2005 but I assume it's original. I had to repair the wiring and degunk the spring to get it to function when I restored the bike.

Horn button little crab logo

Post by conbs » Mon May 24, 2010 12:11 pm

On Ebay right now is auction 370307699144 from one of the guys in Thailand. It is for a left side switch III 724841. That is the old Honda part number which would be a left side dimmer/horn switch according to Silver’s Dream NPS cross reference. (He cross references it to 35250-259-000 but that would be a right side switch. I think the correct cross reference is 35300-271-000.)

BUT, it does appear to be a genuine Honda part as he shows the box and it has the little crab logo on the horn button.

My Honda Parts Catalog for the CL77 shows the switch assembly to be 35300-273-810 and just the horn button to be 35317-259-300. My button looks just like the one in your photo. Where did you get the "TEC" reference? I would think that whether the buttton says "TEC" or "MILES", or whatever, it's just the manufacturer of the injection molded button. Maybe someone will chime in and tell us what their button says. I suspect a number of suppliers were used and the button is common with other bike manufacturers.

Small crab logo on horn button

Post by conbs » Mon May 24, 2010 3:47 pm

The logo on all my other horn/starter buttons is "TEC" (or maybe "TEK"). I have seen references to both for various switches on Ebay and elsewhere.

The switch I found on Ebay is not for CL application, but the old Honda part number on his box would I think be correct for early C/CA. I was just looking at some switch assemblies on Ebay and happened to notice the small crab logo and wanted to pass it along. The small crab logo is apparently not unique to CL models.

If this is just a logo for the button, it probably is not a big deal, unless those turn out to be the only correct buttons for certain years/models. If the logo represents the manufacturer for the whole switch assembly, it might be even more relevant. Certainly we can't be the only ones to have noticed this different logo.

Even if it doesn't mean anything, I would like to know. Probably trivia, but to those who are not 305 fans, this whole website probably seems like trivia. Nonetheless, here we are asking about small crab logo's.
