CL77 Exhaust - Early Versions

Post by Ilbikes » Tue May 18, 2010 4:06 pm

Guys, I need help on the selection of exhaust pieces for the 1965 CL77 I'm restoring. I have never been around nor seen one of these bikes until now - less than 2 months after buying the barn bike and taking it down to raw steel.

How many early CL77's had the silencer on the end of the factory exhaust? Did all of the bikes come with that silencer, or did some come with just the 2-different length pipes? I have the original exhaust system, but no silencer. I'd rather not have to buy one, but if the bike came with the silencer - I am going to need to buy/fit one.

Help/inputs appreciated.

Gordon,
Me thinks all the Cl's came with the muffler and most folks removed them preferring the straight pipe sound. Early came with a slip-on and later production they welded the damn thing in place. Buying one may be in your future. You may get lucky and find one here. RW

Gordon,
If I remember correctly the muffler was only used a couple of years. I had a '62 and a late '65, both new and no muffler. LM would know which ones had the muffler. Cliff

The CL72 was issued with baffles and no muffler.
At the time the CL77 was issued (1965) HONDA added the slip on muffler so I'd say the LAST ISSUES of the CL72 had them also.
At bike CL77-1033482 (1966) HONDA issued the welded on muffler.
I chuckle as HONDA forgot that the USA folks had Hack Saws!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...................lm
