67 CL77 - now cafe and loving the look, fresh top end and all the fixin's.... problem is I have checked and rechecked timing chain marks and rotor marks for acuracy. Starts OK but sounds like one lung, not two and stall right away. One slide frozen at first examination but got it free and cleaned in gently and both slides appear to go up and down nicely now. Got spark on each side and compression is good. Running on one bucket is a tease.

Also, after a year of sitting (inside and dry) with a couple of kicks to keep things free, the kicker is now stuck at nearly 12 o'clock and it is as solid as a rock and I cannot budge the engine. Even rocking bike in gear is not effective. Can this motor get stuck at top dead center and can I turn the enging manually to free it up. Thank you first timer here.

abert51,
I doudt if stuck at TDC is likely. Most likely is that your KS shaft is binding on the first gear or something in that area is amiss. You indicated you have a fresh top end but no word on the tranny.
First thing I would look at is pull the clutch cover off and inspect the shift selection parts for loose/missing hard ware. I do hope this is something to clear up easily but my fear is that you are going to have to scrub up for a case splitting. In any case, keep us posted and as you make progress we can guide you through it. RW

Well, admiditly, new to the CL77 restoration stuff. I got the bike i am going to restore and in the process, got two parts bikes, good thing too. After pulling out the engine in the process of a complete tear down, found that the lower case had a hairline crack and hence the reason for for oil all over the lower case. Before this though, found one of the parts motors frozen tight. I tried all the raditional stuff, but the final solution was to get the bike in neutral (rear wheel runs free) then ended up putting a pipe wrench on the rotor and working it back and forth with a cheater bar, finally broke the rusted rings loose. After that, I decided to see what the mystery of splitting the case was all about. Well after opening up the two parts engines in search of a usable lower case, gained confidence in being able to open up the restoration motor (lots of pictures as a back up for putting it back together). I discovered, inverting the engine and pulling the left case cover off gave good acess to removal of parts allowing the replacement of the case. But back to your stuck engine. I would see if things appear normal in neutral and if so, try turning over the engine at the crank. If that fails, taking apart the case might be the next option which is not as mysterious as it sounds. Good luck on your project.

Thank you guys, never had such as a little help and it's great. No worries mates, I'm not afraid. The more I work at it the more I learn. Maybe I'll be as helpful as you 2 someday. More later.
