Did I just get taken?

Post by sstaylor » Thu May 11, 2006 12:30 pm

Picked up a '67 CB 77 yesterday. Bought it on ebay. After a closer inspection, I see that a previous owner has spray painted the engine, including the block and, I suspect, not with high heat paint. Appears to be missing a couple of vacuum hoses on the carb., and the shifter is quite balky. Small leak around the shifter port on the case (but, after dealing with a similar problem on my GL500i, a problem I should be able to easily address). Engine runs, but the throttle linkage sticks (I don't feel any binding), so the engine ends up revving at about 3-4k sometimes.

Sounds like the dog with three legs, one ear missing, and blind in one eye...named Lucky.

Anyway, I know that it needs a tune-up, probably a carb balance, new tires, etc. Some TLC, in other words.

Are the David Silver books offered on this site good resources for repairs on this bike?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

I highly recommend Bill Silver's books. I was a total beginner last year and rebuilt a basket case CP77 (a foreign version of the CB77) with good success. Your carb slides are probably sticking, which is a common problem that can be rectified (consult Bill's engine rebuild manual). There are no vacuum hoses: you're probably looking at the bottoms of the float bowls where there are gas overflow nipples. If too much gas gets into the carb bowls, it'll just drip out from those fittings. These transmissions tend to pop out of second gear, so beware of that problem. It's fixable, but not without tearing into the transmission. All in all, if you can drive around the block, you're in good shape. But definitely get Bill Silver's stuff and read up, because there's a lot to know.

Good luck,
Jesse
