Cleaning BikeCleaning BikeHello,
At present I use 0000 wire wool, mothers aluminum polish with carnuba wax and mothers chrome cleaner to clean the chrome on a Honda CB77 and lots of elbow gease. Any other recipes? thanks lastman
When I rechromed a bunch of CL77 parts at Queen City Plating in Everett, WA (down the road from rustywrench) the owner told me that the only thing he recommends for chrome is Starbrite Marine polish with teflon. He warned me about the common chrome polishes sold in auto parts stores as they are too abrasive as is steel wool. Although you may not see it these applications remove a small amount of chrome each time they are applied.

Are you talking about removing rust from old chrome or keeping new chrome shiny and bright? For cleaning off rust, I use a product called Jenolite in the UK. It's a phosphoric acid based product which can remove just the rust (turns it black). I apply this with an old toothbrush then wipe with a clean rag. A little wax or silicone polish should keep the water (and rust) at bay. http://www.jenolite.com/shopping_cart_j ... motive.htm G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

Can't afford replating at the moment.
lastman lastman, I recently bought a parts bike that looked as if it had been shipwrecked. A crusty, rusty heap of a barnacled lump and if the guy wanted any more that the hundred I gave him for it I would have left it for the landfill.
One thing it had taht I wanted was a chrome front fender protector. It looked pretty rough, but I went after it with a damp Brillo and it cleaned up acceptably until I can get it replated. Give it a try; it doesn't scratch and does the trick. '63 CA77 - Giving me all kinds of headaches.
'64 CA77 - Patiently waiting it's turn '65 CB77 - A 'great winter project'
Two things to possibly look into for removing rust on chrome: i) Simple Green spray and a brass brush; ii) Colonel Brassy, available through Vertex Industries http://www.vertexind.com .
