Finish on CL77 Engine Cases

Post by lassenpct » Wed Apr 21, 2010 11:07 pm

I've been trying to figure out what the finish is on the sides of the engine cases, painted, plated, polished? If anyone can help me out, it would be appreciated. I really don't want to tear down the engine and case to get it plated, but at least I would know. Thanks in advance.

Craig,
First I'll say welcome to this forum and I'm sure you'll find it most helpfull here.
Most folks here do their engines in a bead blasted finish for the main upper and lower cases. Someone even powder coated in a dull aluminum but my concern would be heat disipation.
Side cases are usually painted in a dull aluminum krylon paint. Oil and alt. covers are pollished to a mirror finish and do look good that way. Now that I think of it, the side covers would look cool pollished as well but boy what a lot of time at the buffing wheel and not correct for a propper restoration. Look in the restoration section and you will find a wide range of ideas on what/how to do yours. Hope this helps ya, RW
