I have not found the missing link. However, after studying the pictures that I posted, I can say with complete accuracy that after applying prodigious amounts of logic and mental agility, I have concluded that it will be found in the bottom half of the engine and not in the top half. You will note that this feat of mental meandering just cut the search area by 1/2. ( Ah, sometimes my mental processes amaze even me.)
Still thinking about the exhaust. You wouldnt have a right side engine cover to trade would you ? Or a set of gas tank panels ? Or a truck load of Anchor Steam Beer ?

Truck loadf of Anchor Steam, no problem! I have two right sidecovers with rather large cracks in them. I'm still searching for someone willing to weld them. No spare tank panels, though they do come up often on ebay. here's a link to a pair you can make an offer on.

Found the missing master link side plate ! After going through EVERYTHING in the engine, the only thing left was the cam chain tensioner. It was nestled way underneath the spring. Had to look twice with the flashlight to find it.
(I was getting sort of concerned.)
More surprises from the p.o. Bob has some pretty new gears in him. I did find a small broken piece of what looks to be the end of a retainer or snap ring. The only thing that looks remotely close is some sort of retainer on 2nd or 3rd gear ( all I can see is the top of the ends.) There's nothing broken on any of the gears, so I am assuming it was debris from a rebuild. It was sort of stuck in the oil "jam" in the bottom of the case. The gears actually look like they've never even been run. No visible wear on them. Undercuts on dogs are still nice and new looking. Some days you're just lucky.

Now for my question. I called the sandblasting/powdercoating place that my cousin's husband had recommended. Says they do nice work, fast turnaround, really decent prices. Got the office girl, told her what I wanted to do, and she said she thought that was the kind of things they did there, but I would have to ask the guys, and they weren't there. Then I had to leave town (no, not because of anything I did.) Soooo........my question is what sort of stuff should I do before I drop the frame off ? I have all the holes plugged with bolts and screws. Do I need to pull the steering head bearing races ? And the swingarm bushings ? I know I will have to pull the lower shock bushings. Inquiring minds like to know.

Mike glad to see bob on track with info and picture coming in.Alway like seeing what going on with projects and parts.Thought I,d show you what your main stand went on from your beer exchange parts program.Alot of work left to do but it's a lot of fun.This the way they look back in my high school days.Tom

odd broken piece

The odd broken piece that I found in the bottom of the crankcase turns out to be the end of one of the cotters on the output shaft gear. Good thing curiosity got the better of me. Took a long hard look through the gears and lo and behold, there was a gap where there shouldnt have been on that one. The things you learn. Started cleaning some of the engine pieces with purple power and simple green. I think I'll take the crankcases to the local autosupply/speedshop and have them do the cleaning on them. Time to start making out my parts list and conferring with the "treasurer" as to how much I can spend next payday. Going to check out the powdercoaters that my cousin uses on his bike projects.
