Being able to SEE a vision with the styling is allways the tuff part. That's a cool start.

As for the big rear tire use caution with the big tire I had trouble with the center stand length.I had to weld pads on the bottom of mine.

official start of Bob's reincarnation

Post by Mike Mullins » Sun Feb 21, 2010 10:23 pm

today marks the official start of Bob's reincarnation. I finished wiring in my heated grips and fuseblock on the GL 1500, and got the '67 CB 77 starting first kick again after cleaning the points and giving the sparkplugs the toothpaste treatment. I will attemp to attach a couple pics or links. I dont think I got all of them on photobucket. If they come through, you can see that Bob was originally red. Food for thought

Bob continued

Post by Mike Mullins » Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:42 pm

I have my Goldwing running and out of the basement. Serious work now commences. I pulled the head and cylinders tonight. I see that the head gasket is blown. Now I know why the po sold it to me ( aside from running into something fast enough to bend the forks.) I also have good bores and pistons and rings. Pistons are marked 0.75, so I can assume I'm on the last rebore. Glad to see they look pretty nice. Lots of odd nuts and hardware. Lower back corner of right side cover broken off ( not fatal). Did lose the sideplate from the master link in the engine even though I had the opening packed with paper towel. I was going to check everything inside anyway, right ? Everything that I can see inside looks good. Will try the grinding deal on the cam chain tensioner-its pretty hard. Will glass bead everything after its stripped and inspected.
Frame is stripped and ready to go get blasted and powdercoated. Wheels look good, rims look good, Will probably source a racing style tank (any suggestions as to what will fit will be appreciated.) and a solo racing style seat.

Will get pics next time

Mike, pull the oil pump out from the bottom of the cases, and you should be able to find the missing side plate. Are you going to run those high pipes? If not, let me know, i may be interested in purchasing them. There are a lot of cool tanks out there, do a search on this forum for some ideas.

Davo: I was sort of halfway hoping the sideplate had sort of stopped to sightsee and visit other parts of the engine and maybe stay with relatives on the way down, and that I could fish it with a magnet. Oh well, I was going to pull the whole thing down anyway. You're right. It has to be resting beside the oil pump for sure. This is a small matter: the good part is the cylinders and pistons look pretty decent.
I do have a spare tank, without chrome panels or pads, and had considered using it and doing something out of the ordinary as far as the panels. I still might. If I can source some derelict panels I just might paint them a contrasting color and use them. Black on a white tank might look neat. I have been checking out some of the suppliers of tanks. I was just looking for some input from some who have used the aftermarket tanks. Specifically which ones fit reasonably well, and what has to be modified/added to make them fit well and securely. I've not used anything along those lines before and am completely ignorant of what it takes to put one on. I have a lot of time to decide. Dont know for sure what I will do about exhaust. I think the homemade high pipes would look neat, but might be somewhat uncomfortable perhaps. You may end up with them after all.
I am getting excited about this one now.
Thanks for the input.

Mike, funny, todays project for me is to install heated grips on the Vstrom, and the Leo Vince mufflers I have for it! Next week I'll bring it up to Factory Performance, and have a K&N filter installed, and the fuel injection re-mapped, and throttle bodies synced. The new bikes are awsome, but I can't do everything myself!

a few pics of Bob's hesitant steps toward reincarnation i

Started tearing down the engine today. Found some surprises. P.O. had used a mixture of odd nuts in the quest to kee ol' Bob operating in the past. Note the pic below of the clutch release mechanism. Cable end receptacle long gone, so a cap head bolt was drilled, the cable wire inserted, and a nut on each side was tightened to hold the cable end in place ( rather original I thought.) I can see I will be sourcing some parts. From what I can see, the right side cover and attendant items are the only real problems with the engine. Note also the blown head gasket. Inside of engine is a bit dark like cooked oil. Wonder why.
I have the phone number of the son of the PO. I think I'm going to call and get some "provenance" as the car guys call it.
