Wasn't the coil....2nd and 3rd brand new coil bles on me. had a problem with rectifier. went ahead and rewired the whole bike for good measure, but the rectifier was the problem.

old post but I went through the same thing after chasing everything I could think of my problem was that I had a bulb that was pull out of the light that lights up the speedometer and it was shorting out up inside of the speedometer. A new bulb fixed the problem.
