Hi,

Why not install a few tapered bearings instead of bicycle bearings ?

Jensen, installing the tapered bearing kit requires a lot more work , and expense , than replacing a few missing ball bearings. The tapered bearings are great, I'm running them in my cafe bike.

Hey thanks for the input guys. I actually went and bought some of the bearings from a bicycle shot and the problem is that my races were jacked up too. I went ahead and bought some tapered bearings.
I just hope I got the right size. According to CMSNL.com they are the SSH750. Sound right?

Hi,

Yes that sounds correct.
By the way, if one part a a given bearing is not up to it's specifications, the part where with it interacts is also not within specifications. Never try to replace only the balls,, you're fooling yourself, doinig a lot of work and don't fix the problem.

After 100.000 km I replaced the bearing of my CB400F, it was steering bad, so decided to start this winter with the front end (steering, forks, wheel bearings, etc).

This was the reason for bad steering behavior :

Yes, I was in denial about my races. I thought I could get away with the cheaper solution. When I put it back together it was lumpy and bumpy. Once I took a close inspection of the races which seem relatively intact, they showed some damaged areas. Although, they didn't quite look as bad as yours!! Thanks for the advice!

Re: What size are the steering stem ball bearings?

New development and I need some help!

So, I got my tapered roller bearings today (SSH-750) and set out to fit them to my CA77. Installing the races went without a hitch and the top and bottom tapped in nicely with a socket and extension. The top race ended up being flush with the frame and the bottom was recessed, but both appeared to be stopped against the rims inside the neck.

Prior to this, I measured the two bearings and spacer I received against the old setup and they measured the same in total height. I thought I'd be ok.

I then placed the spacer (~4mm) onto the stem followed by tapping on the lower tapered bearing. I then slid the stem up inside the neck, slid the upper tapered bearing over the stem and fit it into it's race. So far so good. Although the next part is where I run into problems….

So, I placed the thread (according to the parts microfiche) over the stem and started turning that down. Well, it made it's way down until it was dragging on the top of the frame and barely resting on the bearing it's self. I looked at the old setup and the top half of the upper race has raised portion that makes contact with the thread. Since the tapered bearing does not, the cupped portion of the thread sits lower and now touches the frame.

What did I do wrong? I am afraid to put some sort of space on there and change the dimensions as I put the spacer onto the stem. What can I do to fix this!? Please help!

Thanks!
