kick start moving backwards

Had an issue with the kickstart lever going back wards then snapping back up when first pulling out when engine was hot and bike sat for alittle bit.I dropped the engine out and split the case and found a bad low gear bushing(center piece sep. from bushing) and the dogs were worn on low gear I believe according to my parts book.Not sure if this was the root of my problem or not.The bike shifted pretty well other than this.Not sure what else a bad bushing would do to the shifting.

Not sure if this helps at all, but I had a problem similar to this a few years ago. Basically what happened to me was that while riding my SuperHawk the kick start arm went all the way down and then came all the way back up. The transmission didn't make any odd noises, nor was the ride itself affected. It was just really odd to be riding at about 15-20mph in second gear and to look down to see the kick start operating all on its own. At the time, I spoke briefly to Bill Silver and he mentioned that the roller bearings had probably worn through and were starting to grab the kick start shaft. My mechanic had to split the cases to get to the root of the problem, but it was pretty straightforward fix and I haven't had any issues since (4 years and counting).

In terms of my particular problem, yes that was the cause. But you say that your kickstart lever was going backwards, whereas mine was moving forwards (like it was trying to kickstart the engine on its own while the bike was running and in motion). Unless you're not referring to a CB77 engine?

Please bear in mind that I am not a mechanic, so I personally did not do the work. But, Bill Silver (and others) suggested that the roller bearings were the problem, and my mechanic confirmed it upon inspection.
