I think I heard that if you run amal's for 200,000 miles, they will cause your motor to need to be overhauled. Seems that they will eventually cause the rings to wear, the spark plugs to erode, the and cause the oil to slowly turn brown.. I've also heard from a guy who knows a guy that they will cause the gas level in your tanks to drop over a period of time. Then there was the guy who ran amals and his dog died.......

10k??? have you had to go into the engine yet? What kind of riding do you do? What kind of oil and interval do you do. Either way... thats great!!!! Live to ride and ride to live. And thanks for you contributions. Bill

Hit a milestone today (November 21, 2009).....

Officially have put 16,000 miles on the bike in just over 5 years.

The engine was rebuilt at about 9200 miles - total stripdown, and everything's been done stem to stern. Engine's in the 1st overbore (0.25 o/s). This year I've done about 4,000 miles, and oil changes every 1,000 miles (Rotella 15w40). I usually ride on weekends about 100-150 miles or so, with the odd 'errand' ride during the week. Once a year I do a longish ride (1000+ miles), and the bike's been running like a swiss watch. Those Amals have proved themselves to me, though I'm sure that a well set-up pair of Keihins would be just as good.

Vince I also use the Shell Rotella, in my dirt bikes, street bikes, and even the old bikes. Great price for a synthetic oil, and seems to do all well.

Interested in finding a replacement for my every aging and rather finicky Keihein's, I picked up a pair of Amal's for just over $300. Upon getting everything bolted up and ready, I quickly discovered the cable wasn't long enough for the slide to touch the bottom, even with letting up all the slack through adjustment. Major bummer.

Vince, did you mechanic ever mention anything about this?

Nope, never encountered that problem (at least not to my knowledge).

Could my throttle cable possibly be longer than the one you have? My bike originally came with higher bars, and perhaps my cable is longer as a result?

Hi,

I think Scott means that the difference in length between the inner and outer cable isn't enough. The picture shows the carb slide opened because of that. the inner cable isn't long enough, am I right Scott ?
