Cams and springs

Post by sprocket » Sun Nov 15, 2009 9:57 am

Came across a cam grinder on a machining web site that I frequent.
Delta Cams
Tacoma Wa.
253 383 4152
They will regrind a cam to stock specs for $45.00. They also have a few custom grinds for$65.00. To regrind rockers is $3.00 each. These prices assume that no welding is necessary. I forgot to ask if that was for both cams.
Also found a source of high rate valve springs.
R&D Valve Springs ( they seem to supply Megacycle)
760 948 4698
The price is $212.10 and includes titainium retainers, their part # is 253-H

My old rocker arms are pretty worn out with flat spots and scoring. I would like to send them to this guy because the price of new ones is pretty exorbitant, but I wonder how he recreates the original profile of the faces that contact the cams without having the factory specs or a good example to use as a template? Is it a pretty standard job?

Delta Cams

Sprocket, I have been dealing with Delta for over 30 years, pretty straight up outfit. Although it has mostly been auto related I did have them do my Norton cams years ago, they worked great. I would question them on the hardening of the faces of the rockers. As far as profile goes, they would have to pretty much follow the profile that is currently on the rockers. I live about 10 minutes away from them so if I can be of any assistance, let me know....................................D

Nander, I have no idea what goes into rebuilding cams, followers, etc. Please read reply by Dgormly and/or contact the company. Thanks for reading the post. Karl

Dgormley, thanks for the response and the good words. Now I'm more sure that I'll be sending my business to them. Karl

regrinding rockers, re-chroming or hardening the surface, if following the profile is and if cheaper then new ones, will work fine. I would suggest to measure the i.d of the rocker arm pin bearing and the o.d. of the pin itself to check if the rockers arms are still within spec.

Regrinding cams is a different thing, it always will change (make it smaller) the valve lift hight, depending on the amount of material grinded off.
assembly of Japanese motorcycles requires great peace of mind (Pirsig)
