Post by I-man » Wed Nov 04, 2009 9:02 pm

I finally got my 69 dream running, but now when i pull in the clutch and stomp it into gear, it lurches forward and dies. could someone walk me though the cable adjustment? also, is there something else i should be looking at? thanks

clutch

I-man, first off I wouldn't recommend " stomping" it into gear. Secondly, there is an adjuster on the right side case that needs to be in the right position(type"clutch adjustment" in the search box). You should turn the cable adjusters in and use them for minor adjustment(cable stretch, plate wear). If the bike has been sitting for awhile the clutch will hang up a bit till every thing is warmed up. Do the adjustment and ride it for awhile. .............D

stomp is just a figure of speech. more like 'tap' it into gear : ) anyway, I did a search lastnight, but felt a little uncertain, so I posted. Then I searched and read over some of the same posts again and it's starting to make sense. Nothing like a good nights sleep. Thanks for your reply, I'll let you know how it works out.

lurching clutch

In right engine cover, loosen lock bolt, turn adjusting screw clockwise til it stops, don't force, should turn easily, then turn counter clockwise 1\16th of an inch back, retighten lock bolt, adjust cable adjusters to 3\4 to 1 inch, start motor and pull clutch lever in and release several times, then ease into gear.

If adjustment doesn't work, your plates are probably stuck together.
Warm the bike up in neutral then shut it off.
Now put it in gear, pull the clutch in and try to move the bike.
May need to rock it back and forth a few times.
If the plates un-stick, you will feel it....if not you will probably have to dis assemble the clutch and clean or replace the plates.
I had to pry mine apart with a screwdriver it had been sitting so long.

thanks for both of your replies. I did the adjustment-the adjuster at the clutch lever turned all the way in, the adjuster at the cable as it goes into the case all the way in. 10mm bolt loosened. with quarter in vicegrips turned slotted part left, then right, then left, then right until it stopped, then left an eight of an inch. retightened 10mm bolt, adjusted cable til it had about an quarter inch free play at the clutch lever. No luck. bike still won't roll with clutch pulled in. not releasing? did I miss something on the adjustment? Any tips on taking the clutch apart?

If you are like me you will need some extra case screws, a drill, and an easy out (or vise grips)!
Other than that, pretty routine.
