CL77 Chain Guards

Post by cbxmountainman » Sun Oct 11, 2009 6:36 pm

The pictures I've seen of his repros looked like the early ones with the slots instead of the later ones that are smooth. Depends on what you want I suppose.

Yes I think he has the slotted ones as well. I bought my new one from him (the now chromed one!), and I had some issues with it. I don't know if the same manufacturer makes both versions, but the non-slotted version is not the same shape as an OEM version. The profile of the guard is more 'squared-off' than the originals, and the part of the face that slips behind the clutch cover is straight and not curved (which leaves a very lovely gap between the face of the chain guard and the back of the clutch cover). Plus, the back end of the chain guard is chunkier than the original. So, whichever one you get from him, be sure to pre-fit it on your bike before painting it. These are made of a heavier gauge steel than the originals, so that may have played a role in their method of manufacture.

The nice thing about living in the Baltimore area (there are a few!) is that Tim's place is about 20 minutes away, so I can see these things in the flesh.
