305 Front Lower Bushing

Post by Onemilewest » Sun Aug 30, 2009 8:50 pm

OK. I am putting my 305 back together and noticed that the bushings on the front suspension arm have crumbled. The only thing remaining is the outer ring with a little rubber still attached. I have another front suspension arm, but can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the bushings from either arm.

I tried drilling a hole in a 2 x 4, placing the arm with the bushing over the hole and using a socket the same OD as the ID that the bushing is pressed into. All it is doing is bending the outer ring of the bushing in on itself when I hammer it.

I really need some ideas. The part number that I am trying to remove is 04612 51215-250-000

Hammering won't work. You need a hydraulic shop press. Use a little WD-40 and then exert steady pressure, with the proper size drift (or socket). It will come free at some point, possibly with a bang. --Randall (CA)

If the bushing is really rusted and is adhering to the arm, you may need to drive a small chisel or screwdriver between the bushing and the arm to deform the bushing, then continue bending the bushing in on itself around its circumference until it is free. Sometimes making an initial cut in the inner wall of the bushing by inserting a hacksaw blade thru it helps to get things started. Not pretty, but sometimes necessary.
