Kick starter issues
Kick starter issuesAfter being under a blanket for twenty five plus years, my dads 67 Scrambler is seing daylight, the first issue is that the kickstarter just makes a nonengaging scary noise when you put weight on it. Talked to an old two wheel mechanic friend and his memory is failing him on the cause, (he hasn't worked on one in years). I have resigned myself to the fact that it is internal, and hope that one of you die hards can pick up where his memory is failing.

Is the trans on neutral? Is the clutch released? When in gear can ya roll yje bike?. .............lm
If the KS lever isn't slipping on its spline, and if it's a non-catching ratchety noise and the KS engages in thin air, then it sounds like the same problem as I had with ol' CB. You'll need a pawl, plunger & spring kit (2, 19 & 17) http://www.westernhillshondayamaha.com/ ... &fveh=3158 , possibly bushing (20) and spindle (18). You won't know until you drop the motor and split the bottom end.
Do not attempt breaking the crank-casings apart without the aid of a shop manual or Bill Silver's guide book(s). I'm making the assumption that you don't have the manual(s) or the level of mechanical knowledge required to diagnose the symptom thus far. Please don't take the last sentence as an insult or criticism; but it may save your CL's bacon! Any attempts to disassemble these powertrains without knowledge, experience or proper published documentation can lead to severe heartache.....
Kick starter issuesI feel like the kickstarter is slipping on the splines of the shaft that comes out of the case, my mechanic friend disagrees as he remembers an internal issue with these bikes.
As far as splitting the case, I have had numerous Honda thumpers apart as well as two stroke 250R's and VW air cooleds, I am sure as with everything that there is at least one trick to it. If anyone has ever had their kickstarter slip on the shaft let me know. I appreciate all the help you guys can offer
Experience with other bikes' motors notwithstanding, there are quirks with these earlier models: placement of 'special' nuts & washers, where (and where not!) to use Hondabond, setting up of the clutch ass'y, etc.; and, when splitting, don't omit the removal of the two nuts on top of the casing.

Kick starterMy first cl a 67 came to me with the same issue. I couldn't even get a compression check until I solved the issue. In my case it indeed was the yoke that drives the KS shaft that had a small crack in it allowing slippage on the shaft. Fortunately I had a parts bike on hand that donated another yoke, end of problem. In your case they appear on ebay occasionally and don't cost all that much. If in the end you can't find one, PM me and I may even have one on one of my many engines that are breeding and reproducing in the corner of my shop.
