Exhaust repair

Post by Dgormley » Tue Aug 25, 2009 12:03 pm

OK here's the dilemma, The PO of my 66 CL-77(#1034582) just had to hear it unmuffled so he cut the muffler from the top pipe( I'm not sure if it is even the correct system for this bike) right now I have it rigged back on with aluminum tape and a clamp( doesn't work for very long as there is no engagement between muffler and top pipe) I am thinking of rewelding the muffler back on and trying to cover it up with a clamp(I don't want to rechrome the whole system)It is not a show bike and I'm not a purist. Any advice on lining it up( prior to welding) and some kind of gasket for the bottom pipe would be appreciated. Thanks D.

CL77 Exhaust

Seems to me that the exhaust is originally from a 1967 model as the top pipe was welded to the can and bottom slipped in. The earlier models just had a slip on can and used a siamesed set of heat resistant rubber gasket setup. You can find the rubber set up on ebay ocassionally for not too many $$$. Just cut it in two pieces. As for the top remount, why don't you have your friendly welding shop just weld it back on. The 1/4" difference won't matter a bit. A little hi-temp paint will finish the weld off. JMHO

Forgot to add that just make a mark on either side of the cut while the pipe is mounted on the bike. Makes it easy for the welder to just line it up and have at it.

D, Another thing you may want to look at is baffles or Stuff or Nots. Before Honda used the muffler they used baffles similar if not the same as the CB's, held in by I believe a 10mm bolt. The Stuff or Nots are pretty neat and they are covered on the Forum title page. CliffC

Thanks Cliff and CBX, I like the sound and smoother power of the muffled system. I think I,ll line it up as straight as possible on the bike, tack it, and then take it off to finish welding. Anybody on the forum have one of the gaskets? (LM)?

You'll want to use the correct gasket for the lower pipe, and the correct clamp as well. It looks like you have the clamp, and the gasket is a figer tyre that goes in the muffler can. It may be there. if not, post here and i'll see if I can find the updated part #.
