CL77 Scrambler questions

Post by Mike Hoffmann » Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:30 pm

Working on CL77 Scrambler (received from the original owner who purchased it new) It has frame and engine Serial #'s CL77-10092xx (just 20 numbers apart) I believe this is fairly early in the run, is this a 66?

Second question, I have the front fender but not the front fender stay. I have looked every place and found 6 and 8 hole fender stay assemblies. This does not match the fender I have. It has only 5 holes. The original owner tells me this is the original fender and it was removed to make the bike look more like a Triumph! The original stay assembly was lost, and never replaced. Was there an earlier fender and stay type? Would appreciate any assistance... Thanks!

Agree that it is a 65. Read an article by Bill Silver 'Carbon Dating' mid-sixties honda twins. He indicated that frames 1000001 to 1014495 were 65's and starting with 1014496 the front forks were changed from steel to aluminum alloy. He also mentioned a fender and stay change to accomodate the new forks. SO... looking at the fender I have, it has 4 mounting holes, two pinch points where the forks ride and a threaded stud on one end (opposite of the flared end). This is way different from anything I have seen on the internet. I can upload some photos of the fender tomorrow if that would assist.

Has anyone seen a fender like that? If so, is there a part number for the stay?

The original front fender (red, repainted from silver) that I have is missing the stay. The fender is steel, has a threaded mount on one side, 4 mounting holes, notches for the front forks and one flared end.

Is this fender typical of early CL77's? Does anyone know what the stay looks like? And finally, is there a part number for this type of stay? Thanks everyone, this site has been a great help!

As promised here are photos of the fender I have...

Here are two fenders side-by-side. The silver fender is aluminum has the typical 8-hole mount for the fender stay, is about 3/8" shorter than the original, is narrower by about 1/4" and does not have a flared end. Also note there are no notche

The aluminum fender is for a CL72. The red fender is for who knows what, but definately not a CL77. Your 65 shouuld have steel fork sliders, and a steel 8 hole fender. Sam mount bracket as the CL72 fender that you have pictured.

That red one looks like a Triumph fender. Looks a bit like the one on my '68 Daytona. The stud attaches to the rear mounting bracket which doubles as a front wheel stand. You undo the nut and the rear stay swings down to support the wheel for wheel changeouts etc.
