1965 HONDA 305 DREAM 1/8 MILE WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT!

On Friday my friend Rich convinced me that I should bring out the 1965 Honda 305 Dream I bought from a guy I work with to Raceway Park's Motor Speedway event on Saturday night. "Motor Speedway" is an event at the 1/8 mile track that includes drag racing of pre-1958 cars and pre-1965 motorcycles, live music, a car show and drive-in movies, and is a true multimedia event!

Even though the bike had been sitting for almost a year in my friend Merrill's shop, all we did was drain the old gas and put in some fresh stuff, jump the battery and it started on the first kick! We put the historic plate on it (bike is 100% legal on the street with insurance and registration), cleaned it up and Rich drove it from Belmar, NJ all the way to the track in Englishtown and back (50 miles total). It ran pretty good, hitting a best of 12.88 seconds at just under 52MPH in the 1/8 mile. It was a big hit with the fans and I got a lot of nice compliments on it in the pits!

That gives me an idea! How about a "305 Dream Challenge", where Dream owners shoot it out to see who has the quickest and fastest one on the planet? Hey you "California Dreamers", how about it?

I just have to ask; what is the story behind that picture of a dream that looks like its at Bonneville?

I'm not sure where I found it (I guess I did a search in Yahoo or Google images on 305 Dream) but it's for real. I remember looking it up on the results from Bonneville Speedweeks from last year and it was in there. I don't remember what it ran, but it was doable. On the way to Raceway Park my friend got my Dream up to 70+MPH, and that's a bike that hadn't run for many years and has never been apart! I'll see if I can find the info on the Bonneville deal again. If not, we'll take the 1/8 Mile Record Holder out there and see what happens!

I was curious about this Bonneville Dream and looked up the record on the scta's site and was surprised that it only went 74.9mph and that with a blower! As I remember back in the day a well tuned dream should about 90mph (some test said 100mph but the speedometers were very optimistic). Has anybody timed a dream for top speed?

Hi,

Yes, I did, with my C77 '64
I used a garmin GPS to measure.

it has a standard bore, standard head,
standard carb (but one step bigger main yet).

I only made the inlet channels exactly the same.
the pistons are exactly the same in weight.

It's a rebuild engine (2007), and all original.
it has the old type stainless steel mufflers.

Top speed was 158 km / hr, (lying flat).
conversion is 98.17 miles / hr.
