leaks

Post by rustywrench » Tue Jul 14, 2009 12:12 am

With all the other things out of the way I recently dove into this leak. So before this thread gets too sidetracked, I'll post my new findings.

I removed the r/sidecover, skid plate and stator. After a very thorough cleaning, I re-installed side cover and gave it a kick. With the engine running I removed cover and spent enough time watching under 1000 watts of quartz light. After a very timely warm up period in gear (chain and sprocket removed), there was a very tiny amount of oil coming from the kick start seal and final drive seal but not enough wet things down. Absolutely no oil from the crank seal.

There is however a greater amount coming from the left side case bolt with a temporary fix and some from the oil pump as I suspected. The thread pocket for a screw is missing so that will have to wait till this fall.

So for the short haul, I'll enjoy riding and cleaning up after it hoping all the while something else doesn't let go until I can tear her down and do the whole thing right. Thanks for the feedback guys,I'll keep the sealing tips filed away for the future. RW

pesky oil leaks

Post by mike horvath » Wed Jul 15, 2009 9:23 pm

Hey Rusty,
Good to hear back from you. A good eye with patience (and a ho lotta light) can reveal a lot. Sounds like you've got more goin' on with the underside than with the right side. The seals are fairly easy, but keep us posted when you do get to the "bottom" of it.
Take care,
Mike
