Leaky front suspensionLeaky front suspensionI've just finished a complete teardown, repaint, and rechrome of my front suspension. Upon reassembly before I had a chance to replace the wheel and put any weight on them they started to weep fork oil. It appears to be leaking from the threaded area. I didn't have a pin wrench but did use a strap. They're as tight as I can get them this way. I used the amount of fluid suggested in Silver's book.
Any suggestions? Looking down from the top the seal seems dry. Greg
Re: Leaky front suspensionARE YA SURE THE "O" RINGS ARE THERE?. .......lm
O rings? I don't remember there being O rings but that could be me. The shocks were apart a long time for chroming and painting. Memory fades. I used Silver's manual for reassembly but it leaves a lot to be desired for this sub assembly. I assume that they're the 40.5 X 3? How are they retained? The only thing that I can think of is between the seal ledge and threads of the tube. I saw no groove.
Thanks for your input. Greg
INSIDE THE CHROME PART IS SUPPOSED TO BE A "O" RING AND IF NOT THERE THE FORK OIL WILL COME OUT. ...........lm
LM, thanks for your help but I'm still confused. When I took things apart I photographed the assembly because I was concerned that I'd have this problem. While parts were away getting painted and chromed I looked through the parts manual and bought 40.5 X 3 o rings (51522-268-000) along with a pile of other parts for the rest of the bike. I reassembled per the picture. I can't see where these rings fit. They're too big. The ID is more like 42 or 43 but it's hard to tell. Are they supposed to sit on the shoulder of the bronze piece? Was I sold the wrong parts?
Thanks, Greg
Just above the threads is a grove for the "O" ring. ................LM
I need help!! I am trying to rebuild the front forks on my 1961 super hawk but ran into a problem when trying to disassemble. After looking at the pictures of the fork gac123 posted it looks different than mine. I need to get the brass bushing off the bottom to remove the seal retainer but it looks like I need to remove four knock pins holding it on. These pins have to be removed by knocking out from the inside of the tube??? Not a clue as to how I will do that. Also the brass is peened / staked in to make it more difficult. Has anyone out there done this style fork? I have an e-mail sent to LM hope he returns message. Some pictures.
