Ricks Motorsport Electrics Stator Kit

Post by byrdman76 » Fri May 29, 2009 11:45 am

I installed a new kit from ricks last night on my '66 CB77. Both the stator and the voltage regulator were very nicely made and they even modified the length of the wires to suit my needs on my cafe bike at no extra charge.

The installation was a breeze and pretty much bolted right in - an hour tops if you take your time. The OEM stator housing is still used, so make sure that you have a spare before you order since some of the parts will be needed. You pretty much just get the windings and leads with the kit.

The only installation issues that I found were the pointer for the timing doesn't have an area on the new stator for easy alignment of the pointer. You pretty much have to eyeball the pointer once the stator assembly has been mounted on the bike. I would recommend trying to lock the stator and motor into TDC position before removing the stator to be able to align the two during the re-assembly. You might even want to make a new pointer with a sharpened tip to point at another reference point on the stator to ensure correct alignment. You will also need shorter hardware to mount the stator back on the motor. The new stator is thinner than the original by about 1/2" - less weight woo hoo!.

The performance however was great. Starting off with a 12.60 VDC fully charged battery I was registering 12.5 VDC at idle, 13.7 VDC with the head light on, and 14.85 with the head light off. The readings are very, very, steady.

The head light has no effect on how the unit charges any longer since there are only two wires from the stator, through the regulator, and then straight to the battery.

I would highly recommend this kit to anyone looking to convert to a now worries charging system. Mine was shot from the get go so I decided to go this route.

Good luck,

Byrd

Thanks for posting, I was wondering if anyone has tried one of these. My CB77 isn't charging well. I just put on a new rectifier tonight that I got from Retro Bikes. I hope this helps.
