Lots of electric questions
Lots of electric questionsCB72...
I've never ridden one of these so have some fairly obvious questions. The colour wiring diagram posted on here suggests that the horn and the dimmer switch are the left handlebar switch - however my switch has 3 positions which I think is odd for a dimmer (lo/hi and ?), the switch in the headlight only has two positions - is that right? The switch in the headlamp also has one less wire coming from it than the wiring diagram says it should have (no green). What should be "live" when the ignition switch is in the first position? Pilot and tail light appear to be live as soon as the ignition switch reaches the second position, nothing seems to turn these off? Neutral switch - don't have any cabling for this, nor a switch, was this fitted to all bikes - uk models? Indicator light in the headlamp - neutral indicator? Very low voltage at the coils - should I expect 12v? Low voltage at the headlamp red wire - around 7v - normal if engine not running? Thanks
Re: Lots of electric questionsYA HAVE A EARLY ISSUE BIKE.
HOWEVER A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS FOR YOU. WHERE DO YA LIVE? WHAT IS THE FRAME NUMBER? WHAT IS THE VOLTAGE AT THE BATTERY?. ...........lm
I live in the UK (Birmingham)
Frame Number cb72 102850 Battery voltage 12.5v When I said low voltage at the coils I meant it - starts at about .5v and then dribbles down to nothing on the multimeter.

LOL. OK well I can probably figure most of it out by trial and error, can you confirm whether the switch in the headlamp shell should be 2 or 3 position? I bought it off ebay as the one with the bike just turns through 360 degrees. Also is that the dimmer or the main light switch, and should the side/tail lights be on permanently.
Plenty of time to work on the electrics - just trying various shades of silver on the starter.
YA WANT TO USE THE SAME SWITCH WITH THE SAME NUMBER OF WIRE, (4 WIRES AND LEFT ONLY)
THE EARLY BAR SWITCH DID COME WITH A MIDDLE POSITION AND YA COULD LIGHT BOTH FILAMENTS AT THE MIDDLE POSITION. HONDA CHANGED THE DESIGN TO DELETE THAT POSITION. WHEN KEY IS IN REAR POSITION THE SYSTEM IS IN THE "PARK CIRCUIT". LIGHTS ARE ON BUT ENGINE WON'T RUN. DOES THE HEADLIGHT HAVE THE SMALL "PARK BULB"?. ......................LM
Aaaah park on the ignition switch - great :-)
There is a separate bulb in the headlight that is powered while the switch is in this position. Putting the ignition switch in position 1 I have 12.5v at the coils and the starter solenoid also clicks. So, just the lighting to figure out. How do I know if I have an early or late loom? It looks like I have a green wire for the later switch, but green is also used to the headlamp and speedo bulbs.
