Don't know how devoted you are to the idea of getting a CB77, but if not, there are plenty of bikes for that kind of money (or less!). A friend of mine just picked up a sweet CB550 that was ready to ride for about 1/2 the price of this SuperHawk, so perhaps looking into bikes from the 1970's or even 1980's might help expand your choices. Walneck's Cycle Trader usually has a few things in that price range - I think this month's had a couple of CL's from the 1970's in your price range. As well, maybe check local Craigslist ads, then you can actually go have a look at the thing in person.
If a CB77 style is what you're after (a 'standard' that's somewhat racy - I know some might debate with me on that classification!), perhaps you could look at other models (Honda or otherwise) that are in that general aesthetic/size/style, and then at least you'll have cast your net a bit wider. CB350's, RD400's, CB500's, GS400, maybe even a GT650 Hawk from the late 1980's?
If you're a 22 old college student with a limited budget, you just want to get on the thing and go, and I'm sure there are plenty of bikes out there that are ready to ride for under $ 2000.00. So maybe expanding your choices might help get you the best bike for the money, and one that requires virtually no initial work to ride.
BTW, I'm assuming those oil stains underneath that SuperHawk aren't from that bike, are they???
Newb - What's it worth?Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty set on a superhawk and don't mind buying one that needs some work. I restored a '66 Mustang when I was 16 so I have some experience. I'll check out a few of the bikes you mentioned though.
I hope they're not oil stains! I'm thinking water? I found a bike for under 1000 that needs some work. I think I'm going to go that route.
