Head nut question, among other things

Post by LittleRock » Wed Oct 12, 2005 6:30 pm

I used one of the 8 head nuts to tighten the head bolts on my 305 and I cracked the top of the nut. I am wondering if this is going to cause some sort of head leak. If I do have to replace it, can I just remove the one nut or do I have to remove all 8 in the proper order? Also, is it normal for the oil to leak out if the right side cover is not installed? I hope so. As you can tell, I do not have much experience with motorcycle mechanics. Also, is a compression test accurate on a motor with new rings before it has been run, or does the motor need a break-in period before the results are any good. Thanks for any help again?

The only top nuts that may leak oil should be the front corner ones.Actually in 1967 Honda quit using the dome nuts at the center front two studs. Why did the stud come through the nut? You can remove any and shouldn't have a problem but if you do remove several you would be wise to di the circle again. RIght side cover?. Do you mean the kick starter case or the points cover. If it's the kick start cover no oil should come from anywhere. I think you should run the engine then check the compression. ..........LM

The nut got cracked because I used it on the cylinder stud bolts to tighten them back in the head during reassembly and I went too far and the bolt started to push the top of the nut out.
Now I realize the cover I was trying to describe is where the oil filter and the clutch are, so I guess that compartment fills with oil, is that correct?

You shouldn't ave any trouble using the dome nut over, just put it in a place where you can't see it.

Yes, the clutch side cover holds oil in.

Why are you concerned about the compression in an engine with new rings? I agree with LM... check the compression after break in.

Matt

Thanks for the answers on my head nut questions. That is one less thing to deal with. I am concerned about the compression, because in turning the engine over to set the valves, it turned easier than I thought it would. I do not have anything to compare how hard it should be with, but I kind of thought the new rings would drag on the cylinder walls and create more resistance than what I got. Can I run this motor without it being mounted, or would it jump all over the place? Thanks again for your help.

I thought you asked if the right side shuld leak oil not the clutch side. If put together properly the engine will turn easily. If you do run the engine out of the frame and not in a custom made mount please take video of the jumping engine. ..............LM

I think the theory is that new rings seat and the engine gets tighter and harder to turn over as peak compression increases. If you compare new rings to old, the edge on new rings is sort of rough and convex, on old rings the edge is bright and smooth and sharp which makes a better seal in the bore especially with oil.

When you turned the engine over to check valves and it seemed easy did you have plugs in? No plugs equals no compression equals easy to turn.

I'd set the timing before you put the engine in, that way you will know if the cam timing is good. If you followed the torque specs everything should be fine.

How are your carbs?

I second LM, if you run the engine loose take a video!

Matt
