I have one I got with some ebay parts the other day. I haven't had to study these so am not sure what to look for. Same length as my CL. Has a little rust, but if not in a critical place it would not seem like it would matter. I don't want to send you junk. What else do I need to look for?

CLUTCH PUSHROD WEAR

Post by FAST FRED » Sat May 23, 2009 4:38 pm

I HAVE SEEN A BUNCH OF THESE OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. THERE ARE TWO WEAR AREAS OF CONCERN. FIRST THE FLAT END WHICH IS FLAT WHEN NEW STARTS TO DEVELOP A DIVOT WHERE THE BALL RIDES AGAINST IT, BADLY WORN HERE WOULD SHORTEN THE OVERALL LENGTH, THIS WEAR CAN BE ADJUSTED OUT SO ITS NOT AS SERIOUS AS THE SECOND WEAR AREA. THAT WOULD BE GROVING OF THE ROD WHERE IT PASSES THROUGH THE CLUTCH PUSHROD SEAL. LOOK FOR GROVES OR WEAR LINES ABOUT AN INCH AND A HALF DOWN FROM THE FLAT END. THESE GROVES AND WEAR LINES ARE WHAT CUT THE PUSHROD SEAL UP AS THE ROD GOES BACK AND FORTH. THIS CAN BECOME A REAL BUMMER OF A OIL LEAK THAT NEW SEALS WILL ONLY FIX FOR A LITTLE WHILE UNTIL THE ROD JACKS THE NEW SEAL UP. THE ONLY CURE FOR THIS IS A NEW ROD.

Sir Dragaknee,

The two places Fast Fred identified were present both in my rod and the other one I got. I assume the dimple in the end is not serious if it can be adjusted out. I just left it, but if someone knows different, please advise. Will it catch on the steel ball?

The other wear spots were there in both as well, though they don't seem fatal. I dressed them both with a strip of emory cloth and got the wear spots out. They seem to fit plenty snug in the seal and I would guess would not leak any oil, and being smooth won't tear up the seal. I won't find out til I get mine fired up, which will be a while from now, but I am confident enough I won't look for a replacement in the mean time.

Any one else ever done this with success?
