Relining Worn Brake Drums?

Post by nander » Tue May 05, 2009 9:01 pm

Is it common for brake shops to reline worn brake hubs, or is a very worn hub something that is just replaced? Probably a dumb question, having grown up with disc brakes I really don't have much experience with drum brake repair.

The reason I ask is because, a while back, I had a mechanic set up the brakes on my bike and he said that there was no material left in the rear hub for the shoes to grab onto. My rear brake barely works - for all intents and purposes I have no rear brake. I use the brake pedal mostly to light up the taillight so cars behind know I'm slowing down.

Anyway, I would like to save myself the trouble of polishing a new hub and re-lacing the wheel if my existing hub can be relined.

Thanks,
nander

The brake lining is on the shoe, not the hub. As long as you are not down to metal on metal, your hubs should be good. You can buy replacement shoes at a reasonable cost. Check Retro Bikes or Ohio Cycle.

I just got my 3rd order from Retro Bikes, great service, fast, good prices. Ohio Cycle is also good, but a little harder to order from.
