Yes, there are 5 oil seals on a CB, and 4 on a CL. it can sometimes be difficult to determine which one is leaking. Clean it all up well, and then run bike to see which seal/s are leaking. A dusting of powder can help as well. I like to use Hondabond on the new seals when installing.

cracked crank

so I'll need four. any tips on how to pull the old and insert the new? I think I heard someone say there are two seals that are set in like races which are difficult to insert without possible damage to the seal itself. splitting the cases are out of the question right now. oh wait...it may be closer than I think based on my earlier experience! hope not. any chance you have the PN's? I know nick sells the entire seal kit for like 45 dollars. thanks davo

oil seals

Post by Loudo » Sat May 02, 2009 2:57 pm

Mike, I've one by one replaced all the seals on my '63 CB77. I have had good luck using a thin layer of Hondabond which also serves as a bit of lubricant for the seals which are a tight fit (as they should be.) I like to take my time putting them in, a little tapping on one edge and then the edge on the opposite side. Another good thing to try is using a socket the same size as the seal to tap it in since this supports the entire circumference. You must be careful to not keep whaling away if you meet some strong resistance because the seal edge can catch and curl back and you might not see this until it's too late and once it's in it's difficult to back out without some damage. That's when Daddy uses the bad words.

Also, make sure the recess the seal is about to be inserted into is smooth with no burrs.

cracked crankcase

Post by mike horvath » Sat May 02, 2009 4:49 pm

OK fella's...good news here. Using the techniques supplied by all of you, the case cover was removed today. The small crack appears to have terminated near the left screw that supports the neutral switch. I popped a 1/16'' hole at the termination point upwards and seems to be a good location to do that (its all external). Also did the same thing on the side cover at the end of the crack. I'm relieved at this point! Thanks again to everyone. Now the leak trouble. Hard to say. I truly think this is the first time the side cover has ever been taken off. But, I could clearly see the kick seal protruding which had plenty of movement, that was easy. But The most accumulation of oil seemed to be from behind the stator. Don't know if oil was being thrown from the main drive sprocket or what. So...here we go. Again, on the seals, what is the best way to extract them? Also, what else may I need to know when replacing all four? Any traps on removing the drive sprocket or stator? And the neutral switch, any thing to watch for there? Thanks again everyone for your interest.

You'll need a puller to remove the rotor. Serch, and you will find suggestions, and a link to motion pro, who sells the tool for $10.

Davo, I looked at the Motion Pro link, but there are quite a few pullers listed. By chance do you know which one?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, here's the link for correct puller. Use the search function on this website, as I just did for you, and it will save you from asking a lot of questions, and wearing out the gurus and experts!
