Do you mean the crankCASE cover or the chain CASE? You can do it with the crankcase on but you do have to have the chain case off then stuff the chain over the sprocket and with a coat hanger wire you can grab the chain and pull it around the sprocket. It helps to have the back of the bike way up in the air so you can see down the chain without standing on our head. The chain case is bolted to the swing arm. Of course LM is right, it's easier to pop off the crankcase cover, but if you do make sure you use an impact driver on the crankcase screws.
