Dream riveted battery box?

Post by clarenceada » Thu Apr 09, 2009 8:22 am

Dismantling my 68 dream for painting I got a closer look at one of the po's custom up grades. The battery box has been modified to take a larger battery. Stock has a 9ah battery and this one has a 12ah (really makes the starter whirl). Looks like they cut the sides off the box then riveted a larger piece of metal to the frame then brazed it together horizontally. What can I do, knock it off with a chisel and have the fabrication shop make up a new one? I have made searches for battery box but don't come up with any for sale. Should I stay with the 12ah battery or go back to the stock one? Does anybody have the dimensions of the box and how far the welds are apart, stock? I could really use some help on this as the bike is supposed to be at the painters tomorrow.
Thanks
Clarence

I took the frame to the fabricators and he said they could make one up from a photo or a drawing. I searched for several hours last night but couldn't find a photo of the battery box people don't seem to take pictures of that side of the bike as often as the coil side, with the side cover off (maybe it's like when you are looking for that 13mm socket in your tool boxes and all you can find are the 12mm ones).
I think I'll take in the Honda parts catalog, it has a drawing of the dream frame they should be able to fabricate a facsimile from.

Joe, any pictures you can send would help; I going to copy a page out of the Honda parts catalogue and take it to them with any pictures i can find, monday.

Going through the parts catalogue I noticed on page 72 that ref. no. 10 is for a tool tray board that is mounted behind the side cover but it doesn't show the position it has with the battery box. My Dream didn't have one attached but I rembered a box of parts that came with the bike and found it. If I could find a couple of pictures of a stock Dream with every thing in place would be great.
thanks
Clarence

Thanks Joe that's just what I needed. That piece of of metal on top of the battery does it have any rubber between it and the battery; and seeing how's it's called the tool tray I assume the tool bag goes on top of this tray, right?
