I'm just about to put the right fork back together and I'm curious about the packing arrangement. In the photo I've laid out the covers, fork rib and rib packing in the order I think they should go, but I'm not sure about any packing between the top cover and the fork bridge.
One of the parts fiches I looked at shows packing, but when I disassembled my forks none was there. If there should be packing between the top cover and the bridge, can someone describe the material and dimensions?

Fork Cover Packing
fork washersI just put my front fork together so maybe I can help. Based on way things were when I took apart, I put the rib packing washer on top of the fork rib, between it and the cover with headlight ears. Nothing between rib and lower cover. On top I found remnants of some sort of washer on one side, not really enought to go by, made some replacements that seemed to make sense by cutting them out of 2" neoprene fender washers using two appropriate sizes of socket for guide. Technique here for what it's worth, this is mostly about shock bushings but mentions those top washers too.

However, I'm a bit confused about the chrome rib packing. My search of this forum led me to this post where LM says the packing should go between the rib and the lower cover. http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopi ... ead27bb622 I'm thinking there must be a rationale for having the packing in the first place: is it purely mechanical--to eliminate vibration, noise and wear? Or is it maybe a weather seal to keep dust and water out of somewhere? Perhaps both? Was there a particular reason for you putting the packing on the top? When I took my forks apart the packing was on the bottom, but I can't trust the previous owner's assembly. After all, I discovered a foot-long stick of wood in the center of the fork tube when I got the lower case apart! Wilf
thanks for supportWhy didn't I look at that pic before I put it together? This morning I removed handlebars, steering damper, top fork cover, headlight bucket (already wired, I just let it hang) and top tube covers. Sure enough I had it wrong. Before I could get it back together I had to pull front axle and fender stay bolts and loosen bottom fork pinch bolts to get tubes loose enough to line up with top cover and steering stem. Not sure it even matters, but trying to get it right. All good now. So how was your morning?
