Please I.D. this muffler

Post by Loudo » Mon Mar 02, 2009 4:23 pm

In December when I bought my '63 CB77 the seller threw in an extra pair of what he thought were better mufflers than those currently on the bike. In the event, the mufflers ARE better but now that I have finally got around to closely examining them I note that they are for a different motorcycle. I've attached a photo of one of the pair. I've looked at some random parts fiche and it appears these look much like the mufflers shown belonging to a 1968 CA175. Would anyone care to venture a guess as to the correct bike for my mufflers based on what they see in the pic?

If anybody has some good CB77 mufflers they'd like to trade for these fine, um, "something" mufflers I'm all ears.

That is the issue which requires a plate to be attached at the 2 studs.
It's shown in the parts book. .................lm

They are correct for a CB77. I have heard that the brackets can be tough to find.

Ah, yes

Ed is correct and now I see I should have consulted my parts book before simply comparing new to old and jumping to conclusions. The "new" mufflers are for newer machines than my '63. I note that the parts book does not describe "muffler packing" in the schematic of the "new" muffler. Provided I can find or create the proper brackets, is the muffler/header pipe connection the same as what I have or will I have some work to do to match my existing header pipe with the new muffler?

The bracket fixes the muffler to existing mounting points. ...........lm

Loudo, are your existing mufflers of the two-piece variety also? If so, then all the hardware ~ missing mounting plates notwithstanding ~ should be the same (unless you have the very early variety ['61-type] that require the 'black socks' -- see pic).

Don't omit 'tuning' the mountings with packing washers, rather than pulling the mufflers (against their wills) up to the frame's / peg mounts' hangers; packing the mounting bolts will reduce undesirable vibration and, hopefully, a lop-sided rear view.

Side by side comparison

Thanks for the comments, fellas...I've taken this photo of the "old" muffler alongside the "new." By looking at the parts diagram it appears that the bracket (which I don't yet have) takes the place of both the upper and lower connection to the frame, is that correct?

I also note that my old muffler is simply slipped on to the header pipe and has a small rubber gasket ring that fits in a groove at the mating end. This mating end is a nice looking piece of fabrication, whereas the new muffler terminates in an ugly welded flange. Do I need those "socks" you speak of, e3steve? Have the new mufflers been bodged up in some way or do I simply need something called "muffler packing" in the parts diagram?
