Yeah, well even us middle aged 43 year old barely-know-something guys do it too!

I think that abridged trip will still be awesome, and at least if something did in fact 'happen', you'd be a bit closer to home in case you did have to rent a truck.

So the 160 idea is DOA? What's your girlfriend going to do for wheels? Another bike you could look at would be a CX500 - a sort of Japanese Moto Guzzi. Not too expensive, great engines, good smooth power, and should be pretty easy to find. A friend of mine just got one and he loves it.

the early models of those cx's look great.
I'm going to look into that for sure.

Right now my loose game plan is to get the superhawk running solidly. If i can get it running well enough to be a round the towner, I may just buy a gl1000. If i can't, (which all signs are pointing to) early next week i intend to ship the engine of to LM and have him do his magic. Then it would be about saving up money again for a CX another CB77 or 72, or any other recommendations of bikes that this forum has.

i think whatever i get, i'm going to turn into a rat bike. Problem is, you find a ton of bikes that look nice and clean but don't run. Finding a bike that is mechanically sound but looks like hell, is a bit tougher.
