noisy motor after warm-up

Hello all! I've recently put my old cb77 back on the road and just love this thing! Although it runs and drives beautifully, the engine is quite noisy after warm-up. Sort of a loud ringing, maybe...

It has about 22,000 miles on what I believe is an unopened engine. And it gives off a very subtile amount of smoke at higher rpm's.

The tappets, cam chain tensioner, and timing are set-up well... The mechanic that I use from time to time, and a good one at that, wasn't too disturbed by the noise. But I find it very annoying. He thought piston slap was the culprit and suggested a top-end job may help but no rush.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what path I should take. I was thinking I would just try a new set of standard rings as I can handle and afford that job. Would that help or would it be a waste of time?

Van, Welcome to the 305 forum. Have you tried adjusting your cam chain tensioner yet? My other thought,it might be the cam gear itself. They are rivited in place and after some miles can come loose.This is an area I would rather have one of our other members address as I'm not as strong on engine internals as some others. How about a picture of your ride? That is always a crowd pleaser. Kustommusic

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I think you could be right. I've heard about something like that happening to other Superhawks. My noise almost sounds like a small piece of metal dinging around. But it runs so well its hard to believe that could be true.

So you don't think piston slap and rings???

Here's my little gal...

BTW, I drove all the way from PA to South Bend, IN for this and 2 Dreams about 3 years ago!!!
Some guy was selling a huge collection of goldwings and the old 305 stuff was still left!!! So I took em home;-)

Nice looking bike. What are the air hoses doing that normally connect to the air filters?

Van, Great looking bike! Good luck finding info on tour noise. Oh, I doubt very much its piston slap. But smoke at higher RPMs would be a good sign it needs rings. No big deal there. Kustommusic

Hey thanks guys - the air hoses are connected to the air filters. The white-ish tubing in the pic is the carb overflows...

Would bad piston rings make noise?

I looked around in the forum and someone said these motors can be noisy.I think I'll post a sound bite tomorrow and see if that helps in the diagnosis...

Another beautiful shot. What are you shooting with? I could be wrong in a particular instance, but from what I understand I don't think you're suppose to attach any hoses to the carb overflows on the Superhawks. I remember the resident expert LoundMouse having a discussion with a member who insisted they belong there because that's how the dealer gave him the bike. I couldn't find that thread, but he does state here that the CB77's should not have a tube covering the overflow vent.
