Cylinder heads CA72

Post by Styleisdead » Fri Feb 06, 2009 2:44 am

Tragedy....

My friend, who shares a space with me to work on our projects, knocked over his bike right onto the engine I just pulled out of my CA72 bending the fins on the left half of my cylinder heads. (Not the points side) most of the bends are on the side cover but two or three of the fins surrounding the cover are bent as well.

So at the very least, I'm going to need a finned side cover, but if someone has a Cylinder head in good shape that they want to sell, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

I've seen one for sale on ebay but it's for a 1961 C72, Not a 1964 CA72 and I'm not sure if that would fit.

Let me know what you've got and we can talk price.

Thanks,

Joel

PS, You guys always seem to come through for me. I'm really grateful for this forum.

Joel, C & CA models share the same powertrain. On European models, at least, the only diff between the two is the handlebar (the C had the flat, pressed tin type, the CA the high, Western bar). And the only fundamental diff between Euro & US models is that we had winkers on most, if not all, in Europe. UK models were right-hand drive..........!

The year may be the only determining factor; the '61 head would have had 10mm spark plugs (NGK C6HA instead of D6HA, http://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/NGK_D6HA), but will do the job (even if it's not 'correct' for your '64). Additionally, it's been documented that at some time in '64 the head's fin casting was cosmetically changed slightly.

LM will cast his h305-God-knowledge when he catches up with this topic, smacking me around the chops if I got it wrong........arf!!

So, I'm just looking for the cylinder side cover for my CA72, Thought I found one but this is the picture he sent me... Is this right? What's that piece coming off the side?

Hi Joel,
The picture shown is a CB engine and that is the tach drive housing. The C & CA don't have the treaded nipple. Fortunately you only need the cover, the head doesn't appear to be hurt. CliffC

Joel,
After reading what you wrote earlier, you said you also got some fins on the head along with the side cover, I missed that. What I said about the side cover on engine in pic is still correct info. CliffC

Looks like a C/CA motor (single carb head) with a CB tacho drive nailed in place of the blank camshaft cover.
