Buyer BewareThanks for the help e3Steve, I'll check the length today and repost.
Agreed. You can't (or at least you have to try really hard to) screw up the basic "cross 4" standard Japanese wheel lacing pattern as the holes in the wheel are directional and won't allow you to mislace the spokes. No, it's laced correctly. The only conclusion at which I can arrive (so far) is that the spokes are a centimeter or two too long. (I mean seriously, the spokes are all laced and threaded maximally with threads PROTRUDING THROUGH THE ENDS OF THE NIPPLES ON ALL OF THE SPOKES and the majority of the spokes are STILL LOOSE.) Aaaarrrggghhh. There. I feel better. A bit of catharsis always helps. BTW, I picked this CB77 up in London while serving in the US Air Force stationed in Suffolk (RAF Bentwaters) in 1984. Best 5 years of my entire military career. I LOVE Great Britain. Still stumped near the Alamo.
OK.
The spokes on the front wheel (CMS) are 137 mm from the start (proximal) of the threads (closest to the head) to the top of the 90 degree bend. The rear wheel spokes are (Vintage_001) 149 mm from the same two reference points for the same spoke (90 degree bend). I am under the distinct impression that the front and rear brake hubs are the same diameter (and they're both 18" wheels). Anybody had any luck communicating with and receiving an exchange from Vintage-001? Shagged in SA.
Our stalwart and very irreverent petrolhead motoring program, Top Gear, uses Bentwaters for some of their testing & filming. Brilliant, journalistic and very watchable. They hate Chrysler/Dodge (Viper apart), Cadis & most Yank motormetal; Ford GT & Mustang come out on top though. You guys in NA might get offended! You may be able to catch some back-episodes on the BBCi Player:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... w_series)/ TC -- vintage_001 -- has always been great to deal with; good as gold. Let me know if you have a problem, Gary, I'll see if I can offer pursuasive help. Remember that you'll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. And I've bought a lot of gear from him. He's always treated me well. Technically, I worked at Bentwaters and resided at RAF Woodbridge (sister base 3 miles to the east and home to a 12,000 ft runway used for crippled bombers coming back from pounding the dreaded Hun into submission and currently, I believe, home to drag racers on occasion).
I was a B road fanatic, Snetterton/Silverstone/Brands Hatch attending, IOM visiting terror back in the day. Hell, if they could do something meteorologically speaking with the island, I'd retire there. BTW, I am a HUGE TopGear fan and do not miss an episode. And yes, I know Mr Clarkson considers American iron rubbish and all Yanks obese, ignorant slobs. I own 2 Toyotas (one of them a second generation MR2) , don't own an American vehicle and still find Mr Clarkson et al VASTLY entertaining. I appreciate the advice and upon reflection, the better part of valor would be to contact Vintage_001 and explain (w/o profanity) the situation and my findings rather than attack the spokes w/ metal objects to jury rig them. I'm not thrilled about the 3-4 week transit time to/from (one way) but what the hell, the bike's already been 25 years in restoration. What's another couple of months? My ace in the hole is that LoudMouse lives in Kerrville (less than an hour up Interstate 10 from me). I remain, Shagged in San Antonio
I probably have at least one set of new cad plated spokes here. ..........lm
RIDE IT DON'T HIDE IT!
And all truck drivers rapists and murderers!! That's just his boundary-pushing; how about the episode where they cruised the Southern States in a van/pickup with 'MAN LOVE' daubed across the side? They had to run! I've been a Clarkson fan since '77 when he wrote the reviews within The Good, The Bad and The Ugly pages for 'Car' mag, describing a Reliant Robin (3-wheeler) as a "50hp 3-pin plug". You wouldn't want to live in the UK these days; the social structure is appallling -- knife crime, muggings, old people being burgled. Makes me want to move back and become a vigilante, you know: Bronson-style! I worry for my girls and my grandson. I don't suppose it's possible that TC sent you the wrong spokes? For another wheel, I mean.
