Bogus Badges?

Post by slopokecr » Wed Jan 07, 2009 1:22 am

When I bought my 67 CA77, it had (has) crappy looking tank badges. Besides being faded and cracked, they almost look home-made. And the right side wing faces toward the rear. I was assuming that they were old crappy reproductions. But I have seen a few pics on the internet of badges that look like mine ( I have never seen another CA77 in person besides mine). Do these other bikes I see have old crappy repros also, or is it possible that Honda had some runs of crappy badges?

I know, a pic would help---ill see what I can do.

Looks like you have two of the same side badge, possibly originals, sun faded, with chipped paint on the back. I'd say these were stored somewhere for a long while and not take care of. the finish/acrylic looks different than the originals we have on a cb160, but there are a lot of variables that could cause that apart from being entirely different bikes.

From what I have seen in Pics, the originals, and good repros, have a gold colored wing, and the badge has a dome or lens type shape to it. Mine look like a xeroxed black and white paper laminated in between two thin pieces of flat plexiglass.
Interesting though, that you have seen similar. You never know what they may have done back in the 60s to keep up with bike shipments.

maybe it's just the photo, but the badge does appear to have a curved surface.

the gold coloring will fade with sun exposure.
the back of the badge should be flat with the black paint on it, as well as the impression of the logo in it. there shouldn't be any 'plexi glass plate' on the rear.

From the photo, and looking at the ragged circumference, I'd say that they are home made.

For reference, here's a pic of a tired, ratty pair from a C72 that I sold last year:
