Valve Springs

Post by britman » Sat Nov 22, 2008 10:31 am

Does anyone know if you can still find inner or outer valve springs for a 67 305. My machine shop just called and it wasn't good news. Of course it is Saturday and no one has any info. Just thought I would see if anyone knows if they are still out there.

You can get heavy duty/racing springs from Mega Cycle as well as R/D valve spring. As for stockers I have some used take offs if you need 'em. I'm sure LOUDMOUSE prolly has some or atleast a good source.

305 Racer & LM

Thanks for the quick response from you both. I appreciate both offers and the info. My machinist is meeting me sometime tomorrow since he is working this weekend to finish a rush bore job for a well paying customer. (Not me) I will know more then. From the phone call from him this am he found one broken inner valve spring snapped at the bottom. The rest are not broken but he hasn't pressure tested them yet. The cylinders are bored, but he wants me to make the call on a slight imperfection on one wall, so I may be looking at going up a size on the Wiseco's or a liner. I will know more tomorrow when I actually see what is going on. I trust this guy, he is a real perfectionist and has a great reputation. Just part of the fun of rebuilding a motor that was locked up for years. At least I know I can find the springs. Thanks again guys.

Update on Dilemma

Post by britman » Sun Nov 23, 2008 11:26 am

I just left the machinist. Upon checking the cylinder wall I made the call to run with the current bore and hone. There is one slight imperfection barely visible about the ring line on the top right cylinder. I can't see going up another size in pistons when the spot could run into the next bore size. I can't see the added expense of a sleeve when this shouldn't impact compression in any way. The shop owner agrees but wanted me to make the final call. The valve springs do show some wear and fatigue and one outer base is snapped. He suggests a new complete set if possible. I will check with some of the vendors tomorrow, but don't have high hopes of finding them still available, so guys I may be calling on you for a couple of spares. Not as bad of news as I first expected and thanks again for all of the offered help and support. I am going to spend the afternoon installing new fork seals to take my mind off of my troubles. Should do the trick.
