Hagons, anybody fitted them

Post by toastyhamster » Sun Oct 05, 2008 7:19 am

And found they don't fit? The top cover is too wide and fouls on the frame, looks like I'll have to make some spacers.

Hi

What bike are we talking about ?
I put Hagons on my CB72 and they fitted fine but the spring is too strong.
If you've got a CL or CA did they have the square bodied dampers .. maybe thats why the
Hagons are fouling the frame ?

CB72, seems odd that yours fit. Any chance you could measure the circumference of the top cover for me? If the cover was 3-4mm lower on the shock then it would miss the frame completely, it's just going to catch the frame under the shock mount.

Will do .. I suppose the other option you have is to space the damper unit away from the frame.
I seem to remember there were a variety of rubber bushes supplied with the dampers,
maybe some are deeper than others and push the damper clear of the frame.

I think I might have to call them - they've invoiced me the right part according to their website - 31028, but it looks from the catalogue like theres a 63mm and a 70mm top cover for the classic III shock, so maybe I have the "fat boy" version. No extra rubber parts supplied.

Hi

Not sure what the 63mm and 70 mm top cover means ..

I measured my Hagons and what I take to be an original Honda damper ( least it has the
plastic top shroud and came with a pile of CB72/77 bits ). I've quoted the actual measurements
but obviously they are approximate subject to manufacturing tolerances, paint etc..

Diameter of top shroud - Hagon = 2.3" Honda = 2.3" ( = 58.42mm ) maybe this is the 63mm ?
Circumfrence = @7+1/4" measured ( 7.23" calculated = 183.6mm )

The biggest difference between the Hagons and the Honda units is the width of the top mounting.
If I measure only the metal "eye" excluding the rubber bush then I get:
Hagon = 0.65" ( 16.5mm )
Honda = 0.88" ( 2.35mm )
This would mean that the Honda unit sits further away from the frame if you push it as far on
as it will go. If you do the same with the Hagon then it will probably sit closer to the frame and
be slightly cocked over.
The lower mountings measure the same across the forked ends.

I think you will be OK if you put a spacer on the top mounting bolt before putting the damper
on. If you line up the bottom end first you should be able to measure how much you need to
space the top out.

cheers

Forgot to say .. Hagons and Honda units both look the same re how far down from the top
of the unit the shroud sits .... Phil
