metal flakes in drained oil

Post by allthumbs » Fri Aug 22, 2008 3:51 pm

Well this is bad, no? I look into the pan and find fine metal flakes. It looks just like a brownish metallic paint in there. I am really scared Gene. What have I done to this motor?

any suggestions?

I took the oil filter cover off and found a piece of the edge of the filter was missing. I also found that the filter was not really connected to anything. I guess just rattling around in there, Or I just pulled it out all wrong and slipped it off the chain.

Now, what happens if I remove the whole crankcase cover? do I get myself in more trouble. The diagram does not show any springs or clutch parts that will go flying once I take it off but, that does not mean anything/

would love some help

You have the early cover and may just as well remove the case because the hole isn't large enough to install the filter chain and filter. I would like to see a better pic of any wear area. ................lm

that hole is too small that is for sure. Will I run into any disassembly trouble when I remove the cover? ie, is it connected to any internals? I can't tell by the diagrams. I'll get good pics when I do that

Thanks LM

Just make sure to remove all of the screws before removing cover. Nothing will fly out at you when you remove it. I have a pile of those oil filters. PM me if you need one.

disturbing that I can't find the missing piece, but I guess that's whats in my oil. here's the damage LM, seems fine really, you think I should just run clean oil through it and reassemble? maybe I change oil again rather soon?

how does one clean the filter anyway
