my 1964 cb77 is overheating on the right hand cylinder aftera rebuild, what can this be? The engine was in bits when I bought the bike.

Several possibilities, Intake valve too tight, intake leak, jets too small, timing too far advanced, fuel screw too far in. Did you follow Eds tune up recipie in the FAQ section?

HI, I BOUGHT BILL SILVERS ENGINE REPAIR & RESTORATION MANUALS & DID EXACTLY WHAT IT SAID IN THE BOOK. THE STANDARD BORES SHOWED NO OBVIOUS SIGNS OF WEAR, SO I JUST REPLACED THE PISTON RINGS & I PUT NEW CAMSHAFT BEARINGS IN WHILE I WAS AT IT. I BOUGHT 2 KEYSTER CARB KITS, BUT THE BIKE WAS RUNNING TOO RICH, SO I CLEANED & PUT THE OLD JETS & NEEDLES BACK IN, CHECKED FLOAT LEVELS ( 22.5MM ) THAT SEEMED TO DO THE TRICK, BUT IT'S STILL GETTING INCREDIBLY HOT ON THE R/HAND CYLINDER, EVEN AFTER ONLY IDLING FOR 1 MINUTE, IN FACT SO HOT IT KEEPS MELTING THE EXHAUST PIPE/MUFFLER RUBBER SEAL ( I'M RUNNING OUT OF THEM ) I'VE CHECKED & DOUBLE CHECKED EVERYTHING, BUT TO NO AVAIL... SUICIDE SEEMS MY ONLY OPTION ...PLEASE HELP

What color is the plug? White means running lean. Spry starting fluid around amnifold to check for intake leak. Re-check valve clearance. Follow Eds tune up recipie. here's a link, you may have to click on " how do I tune my Superhawk"

OVERHEATING

Post by joken120 » Fri Aug 08, 2008 5:00 pm

HI DAVOMOTOR, THE R/HAND CYLINDER SPARK PLUG SOOTS UP REALLY BAD, EVEN WITH A BRAND NEW ONE FITTED ( NGK D8HS ) AFTER ONLY A FEW SECONDS OF RUNNING. I'VE NEVER KNOWN ONE TO SOOT UP THIS QUICK. CARB HAS BEEN CHECKED & CHECKED AGAIN. K24231 NEEDLE 2nd NOTCH UP FROM BOTTOM, #42 SLOW JET, #135 MAIN JET, AIR SCREW 1-1/8 OUT, CARB SLIDES NOT REVERSED. BIKE WILL START FIRST KICK FROM COLD WITHOUT CHOKE. WHAT ELSE CAN I TRY?...REGARDS.

How about the needle jet? Could the seat it be worn oval a bit allowing extra fuel to get past it? Seems like that's about the only thing left to check.
