Wheel lacingWheel lacingTook a plunge today and tried lacing an old Akront rim to a Superhawk front drum. All went surprisingly well and was much easier than expected. However, I noticed that half of the spokes had
quite a bit of thread showing on the body side of the spoke. The nipples are snug to the point that none of the spokes rattle when plucked but I haven't gone through the final torque sequence yet. I saved the old spokes and a quick look seemed that they may have been the same judging by the rust pattern on them. So good folks, did I mess up or is this normal? Thanks in advance for any help. Karl

Wheel lacingLOUD MOUSE and davomoto,
Thanks for your quick responses. The new and old spokes, when side be side, are the same. The wheel rim is round and not bent in any way. The center of the rim is aligned to the center of the hub as measured between the spoke flanges. There is ,however, an interesting pattern to those spokes whose threads are not fully engaged: If you look at a portion of the wheel some of the spokes 'lean' in one direction while the others 'lean' in the opposit direction. All of the spokes in question, regardless of the side of the hub, 'lean' in the same direction. Something that just occured to me, does the rim have a right and left side that have to be positioned correctly relative to the hub? Thank you all again for your time, Karl SpokesI just finished lacing both wheels on a super hawk and 150 benly . First of all, there is no offset on a superhawk, benly or dream wheel. Second, there is no "right" or "left" side of rim. When lacing, all the spokes on one side of hub line up with holes in rim leaning in that direction. Also make sure all inner spokes stay inside of outer spokes leading toward rim. Hope this helps. I would send pic's but do not have my camera till monday.
Howard wheel lacingjdbenly,
Thanks for the information. After a few tries and phone calls to old friends I got both wheels finished . Don't tell anyone how easy it is - let them think you're Superman! Actualy, I plan on posting a step by step so that others can at least attempt it. Thanks again to all who responded.
