What is this bike?????

Post by Graniteman » Mon Jul 21, 2008 9:43 pm

New guy here - first post....................so if it's in the wrong place please give me a little slack.
My father-in-law passed away 2 years ago, he was a Honda dealer/mechanic for many years.
We've got a bike that my wife just remembers as always being around but never running and she really knows no more about it. The number on the engine is CA95E-5014743. Can someone please tell me what this bike is (Benly 150cc ?) and also what year it is, we have no paperwork for it. It was last plated in 1966, it only has 2257 miles on it and is in very nice condition. It turns over freely, the oil is clean, etc. I haven't had a chance to see if it will run yet; I'll need to hot wire it (no key) and get a battery (is it 6 volts ?). But It sure appears like it should run.
Any and all info and advice is very much appreciated. BTW any ideas on the value?
TIA....................Mike
P.S. Is it electric start or is that just the generator at the very front of the motor?

You may get more help at: http://vjmog.com/index.php

The bike is a 150cc Honda Benly My best guess is 1965, but someone at the other site will know exactly. That part on the front of the engine is an electric starter. It is a 12 volt electrical system.

The CA95 has a 6 volt system.

Value on these can be all over the place but my guess from seeing no pics and if its a runner is somewhere around $1000. More if its original and in nice shape.

Cool. Thanks for correcting my bad info, Hahnda. I had always thought the 6 volt stuff was on 125cc and smaller.

See, Graniteman, I TOLD you to go to another site for info.

Thanks to you guys for the info and esp. the wiring diagram.
The more I look at this thing the more I see how good the condition really is; the milage is 2,027, the tool kit is complete and never been used, tires are original and hold air, etc., etc.
The only flaws I've seen so far is the seat needs redone, the tank emblems are toast and there's a dent on the top of the front fender like something was dropped on it.
The story behind this bike I just found out is that it belonged to a guy who was a car dealer (it has his sticker on it), he was getting a divorce and he had my father-in-law hide it for him, he then lost interest in it and ended up trading it to my FIL. This would explain why it hasn't been plated since 1966! It has some funky chrome crash bars I guess you could call them on both fenders AND some extra funky white plastic saddle bags. These things esp. the bags are I'm pretty sure aftermarket stuff.?.?
What will be my chances of finding replacement tank emblems?
In the next few days I'm going to get a battery and get this thing running. I'll keep you guys posted in case anyone cares.
I will be selling this little bike after doing the few things it needs to be ready to roll.
I'm sure this thing has been setting inside since '66!
TIA for anymore help!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a ca95 too, havent gotten a chance to tinker with it yet.
the best place i've found to compare value is ebay completed auctions. this should give you a pretty good ballpark. i only paid a couple hundred for mine, but it's much more dilapidated than your description.
ebay is also a decent source for tank badges - reproductions, NOS, and UOS (used old stock). I think you can get decent looking repro's for about $50 for alot of the bikes, though they may be abit generic and not include all the text the originals had ( I think the ca95's read 'Benley 150' underneath the honda logo.
You need to post up some pix for us all to drool over <smile>

Again thanks for the help on this guys...................getting closer to running every day. I found that it had a few little rust holes in the bottom of the gas tank so I've just about got that taken care of. Been doing alot of cleaning, from 20 feet away it looked pretty good but since as far as I can tell this bike has been sitting for about 30 years it needs a good cleaning, I'm sure you all know what I mean.
So with a serial number (on the engine) of CA95E-5014743 can someone tell me what year this is?
Is it a '64 or a '65?
TIA on that and yes I will post some pics soon, esp. since I believe we'll be selling this one!
I will get it running first and then post everything about it I can (including pics).
