Paint or PolishPaint or PolishI know this subject has been covered in nearly every venue on this forum, so if no comments arise I will chuck it up to the old "Beating a Dead Horse" scenario. I have got my Scrambler motor back together after a refresh and it will hopefully be going back into the bike this weekend. After wiring and final adjustments, that old first kick and prayer routine should be coming up shortly. One of the final things on my short list are the dreaded engine side covers. I have read all of the threads concerning the Krylon dull aluminum paint, bead blasting ( I don't have access to a set up), stripping the original paint, and so on. Has anyone ever stripped the side cover paint and just had polished the cases. I know this would be labor intensive but I spent a few minutes with fine steel wool and rubbing compound on the clutch side case and got fairly decent results with about 30 minutes of work. I have also searched high and low in my town for the Krylon dull aluminum paint and cannot locate it. I did try Dupli-Color aluminum engine paint and Rustolium silver high heat paint on spot areas of two rotor side covers with about the same results. I shot both test areas with acyclic clear for added sealing and protection and will probably use it if I go the painting route. I have attached a couple of shots and would weclome any suggestions from those who have gone down this road before.
Britman,
I used Tempo brand Professional Choice Dull Aluminum Laquer (Part No. 808) to spray my side covers. It discolors when fuel gets on it but I found a clear top coat, U-POL Clear #1, which keeps the paint from staining. you might also try Eastwood's clear coat for painted surfaces. I painted my side covers because I restored my CL77 to as close to stock as I could. I've seen photos of polished side covers and they look good to; a matter of preference. George Thanks for the infogramey 7, I ended up coating with acrylic clear. Overall I am satisfied with the results. They should be completely cured before I install them. I just finished the wiring last nite. I had to fabricate a couple of springs for the horn and dimmer button but everything works to include the neutral and high beam indicator. I am still waiting on a oil slinger o-ring and inner filter cover o-ring from Western Hills Honda. D-Day for the first kick is getting closer.
